Coconut oil isn't healthy. It's never been healthy.

The American Heart Association recently released a report advising against the use of coconut oil.  The  Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease advisory  reviewed existing data on saturated fat, showing coconut oil increased LDL ("bad") cholesterol in seven out of seven controlled trials. Researchers didn't see a difference between coconut oil and other oils high in saturated fat, like butter, beef fat and palm oil. In fact, 82% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, according to the data — far beyond butter (63%), beef fat (50%) and pork lard (39%). "Because coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD [cardiovascular disease], and has no known offsetting favorable effects, we advise against the use of coconut oil," the American Heart Association said in the  Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease advisory .  Frank Sacks , lead author on the report, said he has no idea why people think coconut oil is healthy. It's almost 100% fat. Past

Trump outlines new Cuba policy in speech in Miami's Little Havana

President Trump told cheering Cuban-Americans on Friday that his new restrictions on U.S. travel to and business dealings with Cuba will help bring down the communist regime that has oppressed its people for more than a half-century. "With God's help, a free Cuba is what we will soon achieve," Trump said in unveiling plans that reverse some of the revamped Cuba policies made by predecessor, President Barack Obama. The current Cuban regime has been in place since 1959 and weathered a U.S. economic embargo from 1962 to last year, when some of the restrictions were lifted. While Trump told supporters that "I am canceling the last administration’s completely one-sided deal with Cuba," the revamped policy really doesn't do that. For example, while banning individual self-directed travel to Cuba, trips for specific educational, government, religious, and social purposes are still permitted. The two nations will still have re-opened embassies in their capi

Bill Cosby judge declares mistrial; prosecutor vows to retry case

Image
NORRISTOWN, Pa — The jury in Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial here declared itself still hopelessly deadlocked on Saturday and Judge Steven O'Neill declared a mistrial. O'Neill polled each of the 12 jurors whether they believe “there is a hopeless deadlock, which cannot be resolved by further deliberations?” Each juror stood and answered yes. Cosby lead defense attorney Brian McMonagle then motioned for a mistrial, which O’Neill promptly granted. District Attorney Kevin Steele told the judge he intends to retry the case. He told reporters at a press conference later that accuser Andrea Constand is "entitled to a verdict."  He said he was disappointed by the mistrial, reiterated that he had no doubts about the state's case and that the trial was important for victims of sexual assault. O'Neill released Cosby on the same conditions of his $1 million bond posted in December 2015. Bill Cosby mistrial shows sexual assault laws must change

Michelle Carter was guilty of involuntary manslaughter after text messages revealed she urged her boyfriend to "get back in" his truck as it was filling with carbon monoxide.  Wochit-All (Photo: Pat Greenhouse, A  2 LINKEDIN TAUNTON, Mass. — A woman who sent her boyfriend a barrage of text messages urging him to kill himself when they were both teenagers was convicted Friday of involuntary manslaughter in a trial that raised questions of whether words can kill. Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz found that Michelle Carter caused the death of Conrad Roy III, who intentionally filled his truck with carbon monoxide in a store parking lot in July 2014. Carter cried as Moniz detailed her conduct in explaining how he reached his verdict, but she remained stoic when it was formally pronounced. The judge noted that the 18-year-old Roy climbed out of the truck as it was filling with toxic gas and told Carter he was scared. “Get back in,” Carter told Roy, ac

Trump keeps policy on Dreamers, eliminates protection for older immigrants

WASHINGTON — President Trump's Department of Homeland Security has rescinded former President Barack Obama's order shielding millions of migrants from deportation, but is letting stand a policy that grants reprieves to people who arrived in the United States as children. Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly announced late Thursday that, after consulting with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, he is rescinding an Obama memorandum from 2014 that allowed immigrants to remain in the United States under certain conditions. The rescinded memo created a program that protected undocumented immigrants from deportation if they have a child who is a U.S. citizen or lawful resident. The program – known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, or DAPA – was never implemented because it was challenged in court by 26 states and was  put on hold by federal courts . The DHS decision to rescind the memo came ahead of a court-ordered deadline to res
